The Portfolio- Diversity Nexus: An Innovative Approach to Manage Diversity in the Workplace
A diverse workplace is proven to improve performance, however, what is less clear is how to optimize communication processes in organizations to take advantage of diversity. Communication in diversified workplaces is a complex process as bringing shared understanding among staff with varied activities and goals is challenging. Project-Program-Portfolio Management (3PM) approaches are one way of coordinating different activities towards common goals. Taking a Knowledge-Based View (KBV) approach, this paper illustrates how 3PM approaches, as a meaning creating knowledge process, can contribute to effective communicative practices. To explicate the process of communication in a diversified workplace I utilize a structuration inspired view of organizational structure, supplemented by the concept of episodes (Luhmann, 1995). I use a multiple case study approach of private and public sector organizations to explore communicative practices in diversified workplaces. My argument is that 3PM as a knowledge practice facilitates effective communicative processes that improve workplace diversity and contributes to a successful organization.
