Listening GENEROUSLY: the key to effective leadership, team success and individual fulfilment
For any of us to interact – in whatever environment or in whatever “role” we have, we need to communicate – a two-way process.
“Talking” comes relatively easily – we need to get our message across and we usually have an agenda. However allowing the recipient of our view to respond doesn’t always hit the mark. We may hear what they are saying but are we truly listening “generously” – i.e. focusing on what they are saying, understanding what they are saying and giving them enough time, rather than waiting to jump in and get our own response in?
It is an easy trap to fall in to and we all do it – impacting our position as leaders, team members or indeed husbands, wives, partners. This is key to gaining commitment; in order to gain respect, we need to earn it. Listening generously is the starting point to earning that respect.
